A bicycle found in a wheat field. A missing girl. Is history repeating itself? 23 years ago, a young girl named Pia was raped and murdered at this exact spot. Has the same thing happened now to 13-year-old Sinikka? Krischan, the retired police inspector who led the first investigation, is convinced that there's a connection between the two crimes. His efforts to capture the killer back then were unsuccessful; this time, he is determined to bring him to justice together with his younger colleague David. While Sinikka's parents are trapped in an agonizing period of waiting and uncertainty, their daughter's fate rips open old wounds in the heart of the first victim's mother. She, in turn, has the unsettling feeling that a visitor to her home - a nice young man, married with two children - is her daughter´s killer. As the days go by, an unbearable heat lies over the town's modest homes like a bell jar. And behind the doors, once intact worlds begin to fall apart.
On a hot summer day, a bicycle is found in a wheat field - the exact scene of a crime committed 23 years ago. This time 13 year-old Sinikka is missing. While the investigator of the unresolved case and a young colleague start their inquest, for Sinikka’s parents an agonizing period of waiting and uncertainty begins. The summer heat lies over the modest family homes like a bell jar and, behind the doors, once intact worlds begin to fall apart.

In his strikingly commanding debut feature, Swiss-born Baran bo Odar confirms his status as one of the most promising and talented young directors of today. His exceptional directing skills and distinctly cinematic language give this screen adaptation of a bestselling novel its unmistakable signature. Mesmerizing performances of top European actors - headed by Ulrich Thomsen (The Celebration, Brothers), Sebastian Blomberg (The Baader Meinhof Complex), Katrin Sass (Good Bye, Lenin!) and Burghart Klaussner (The White Ribbon, The Edukators) - are central elements of this intense drama, reaching far beyond the crime story.“Baran Bo Odar’s moody and magnificent crime thriller is an elegant combination of subtle chills and haunting melodrama.... Beautifully shot and with impressive and evocative sound design, THE SILENCE succeeds in being engrossing and intriguing while carefully avoiding explicit violence and trauma. ...Nikolaus Summerer’s evocative cinematography, impressive production design by Yesim Zolan and Christian M Goldbeck, and Baran Bo Odar’s astute use of camera angles (particularly some striking overhead shots) and deceivingly gentle pacing.” - Screen Daily, Mark Adams “Compelling German crime drama... Finely helmed sophomore outing for writer-director Baran Bo Odar ("Under the Sun") gives its topnotch cast plenty of room to let rip with material that emphasizes psychology over procedure, while strong craft contributions further impress....nuanced perfs. Moehring reps a particular standout, especially in a wordless scene in which he succumbs, quivering with both shame and pleasure, to his desires.... Odar´s direction is strong overall, especially in its deployment of telling details.”  - Variety, Leslie Felperin

August 1984. The summer is maddening hot. The 23rd Olympic Summer Games are taking place in Los Angeles. On a Radio Show Ronald Reagan makes a joke about bombing Russia. A catastrophic drought causes a bad harvest in over twenty African countries, every month over 20,000 children are dying in Ethiopia. None of this really matters to a young boy named Victor, who is wraped up in his own world… During the summer vacation Victor is sent for the weekend to his aunt and his cousin´s. This shouldn’t be that special, if it wasn´t for his infatuation with his fifteen-year-old cousin Denise or the terrible neighbour’s dog he was attacked by years ago. Perhaps the incident at the bridge would have never happened…
